Chandigarh’s Golden Girl Janvi Aims For A Gold

She’s just 12 and yet, she dreams big! She’s Janvi Jindal – the one and only one who has found a place in the prestigious India Book of Records. Janvi Jindal and her parents are thrilled about it, especially when she has been working hard to achieve this feat and that too without much formal training.

This Chandigarh girl has registered her name in the India Book of Records in two special categories, ‘Marvellous feat to glide downstairs while skating’ and ‘youngest to perform Bhangra on skates’. Her family explains that she is the first in India, who can glide downstairs while skating and also perform Bhangra with skates on. Janvi is the only girl in the country who has got the distinction of performing an otherwise male dance form and can even perform glide even on chairs, which is one of its kind feat for a young girl of her age.

We spoke to Janvi about her journey from not being a skater at all three years ago to being recognized for her dancing skills on skates by performing Bhangra, which no one of her age has even attempted so far. Hats off to her father, Munish Jindal who got her a pair of skates without her even knowing about it and today he smiles on his daughter becoming an expert in it, which would however not have been possible with her own determination. Janvi is a class seven student of Saupin’s School, Sector 32 Chandigarh.

“I have always been fond of dancing but had never tried skating. I was just nine when my papa took me to Decathlon and made me wear skates and he just pushed me. I was myself surprised and so was the staff there when they saw me skating smoothly, and that too without any formal training before”, says Janvi and then laughs.

She adds, “My papa bought me skates and there was no looking back after that. He trained me in skating by watching training videos on YouTube, even when he had himself never tried his hands on them. Seeing my interest in skating my papa made me attend a national camp on skating last year and there took guidance from Adesh Singh from Mumbai, a National Coach in freestyle skating, in which I can call myself an expert now.”

Janvi also won the National Skating Championship in 2019 and can now perform freestyle skating on stairs and similar terrains. Interestingly, a girl who learnt through YouTube videos has her own YouTube channel now!

When asked on how she thought of performing Bhangra on skates, Janvi says, “Papa said let’s try something new and since I hail from this region where Punjab is known for Bhangra, we decided to take it up and my dance teacher, who is also a Punjabi choreographer introduced me to dancing on skates by first teaching me all Bhangra steps which I then performed on skates.”

“I want to win a gold medal for my country”, Janvi says with an emphatic smile on her face when asked what her biggest dream was. Sharing her daily routine, she adds, “I get up at 4 in the morning, do yoga and practice my skating”, and she does all this at her Sector 22 house here.

Janvi has been good in gymnastics as well and she envisions to do a ballet on skates soon. What is her next record-breaking feat? Janvi smiles and says, “I just want to excel in skating and want to break more records to make my parents and city proud of me and I will definitely give my best to achieve it.”
