Chandigarh: Panjab University Campus Students’ Council (PUCSC) elections will take place on September 7, as announced by Vice-Chancellor Arun Kumar Grover. The nominations can be filed on September 2 while results will be declared on the day of polling. PU officials said they are yet to calculate the total number of students this year but it will be around the last year’s figure of 14,500.
With the announcement of election date, code of conduct has come into force. The authorities will now hold an all- party meeting with student bodies. The final list of approved candidates will be put out on September 3 by 3 pm. Polling will begin at 9.30 am onwards. The counting of votes and result of panel candidates will commence at 2 pm and will be declared by around 6-7 pm. The counting of votes will be centralised and will be held in the Gymnasium Hall.
VC Grover said students who did not fulfil the attendance criterion would not be allowed to contest the elections. Those who took late admission with special permission from the VC would not get any relaxation regarding the attendance condition for the elections.
He said “Student elections in the university should be a good experience for everyone. Students gain valuable experience after taking part in the election process.” Recalling his student days, the V-C said that he was once elected as a class representative.
The student bodies will not be able to canvass in the girl hostels in groups. Only panels of different student organisations with identity cards will be allowed to enter girls hostels for canvassing. Executive elections will be held on September 14 in the auditorium of physics department.
Chief security officer Jatinder Grover said “Security checking after today will become even more stringent and we will not tolerate any kind of violence on the campus. All the activities from now on till voting will be held under video surveillance”
